If spectacular design is the key to any watch house, creating both beautiful and innovative pieces is surely the icing on the cake. It’s something that Dior has quietly become a master at. Not only does it produce interesting watches from a design perspective, but also champion’s innovative and creative movements inside.
Its Grand Bal watches became the talk of the watch world, after last year’s range modelled after the first every Christian Dior Haute Couture show back in 1947. Last year’s pieces were elegant and beautiful, and each took influence from a legendary Dior garment.
This year, the brand is going one better – letting the public create their very own bespoke-designed models. The new collection lets buyers customize their Grand Bal watch in any way they please, right down to the inverse rotor materials to dial colours and more. This means that Dior has once again set the bar for mechanical watches with exceptional design.
The Grand Bal model is characterized by its oscillating weight which is positioned on the front of the dial (most timepieces have this feature on the back). The oscillating weight powers the automatic movement inside. In this case, the functional rotor can be decorated anyway the buyer likes. Other elements – such as the case colour and strap – can also be mixed and matched to create a truly bespoke timepiece.
The Dior Grand Bal collection reaches new creative heights with each collection. But it’s not just skin deep. Underneath the Grand Bal’s 36 millimeter bespoke exterior lies a genuine Swiss Inverse 11 ½ caliber, developed by the atelier’s horologers.
The complication that drives the watch actually echoes Christian Dior’s first designs of ball gowns, and is traditionally decorated in materials such as satin faille and taffeta, then constructed into the opulent and architectural structure of a party dress. "A ball gown must be the one of your dreams, and must also make you a dream-like creature," said Christian Dior, back when balls were still prevalent affairs.
Of course, with everything from the hands of the watch right down to the engraving on the case back to choose from, some might find it hard to realize their dream timepiece. Thankfully, Dior provides each buyer with a consultation from its creative studio, on hand to guide you in your choice.
Once a design has been chosen, Dior’s fine watchmakers take over and in just five months the bespoke Grand Bal timepiece will be ready and delivered direct to your door.
Dior Grand Bal bespoke timepieces are available for the next two weeks from an exclusive pop-up following the Dior Haute Couture show in the city. For more information visit Dior.com
