One of the remarkable things about Dolce & Gabbana is the Italian house’s ability to draw on the same tropes over and over without ever coming across as tired or clichéd. Take the brand’s Cruise 2020 collection, for example. The hallmark elements of Dolce & Gabbana design all make an appearance, from black lace and rich florals to Sicilian references and a sense of unabashed sensuality, but nonetheless feel new and different. As is evident in the collection’s range of heels, which puts a twist on signature codes for a familiar yet fresh feel.
The emblematic house logo takes shape as sculpted baroque-style heels, with the letter D on the right side and the G on the left, which adorn a pair of black boots, Mary Jane pumps in black or red, and ankle-strap sandals in blush pink leather or gold-tinged brocade. The D&G branding also crops up on the toes of block heeled pumps and slides in gold jacquard or black leather.
References to the Sicilian heritage of Stefano Gabbana emerge in the pearl details of several designs, such as the tiny embroidered pearls on a pair of black stilettos, the decorative button-like pearls on the straps of two-toned slingbacks, and the large pearls that sit on the heels of purple and gold sandals.
Another highlight is the Devotion heart that embellishes a pair of white leather sandals, gilded black stilettos, and pumps in ramage jacquard. Symbolising the devotion to style, hard work, creativity, craftsmanship, and more of the designer duo, the ornate sacro cuore (or sacred heart) is hand-tooled in brass and copper, and garlanded with miniscule pearls and gold-toned foliage.
It wouldn’t be a Dolce & Gabbana collection without some florals, and for Cruise 2020 there are blooms in abundance. Slender pink roses with green stems twirl across the white and black leather of pumps and slingbacks, while crystal flowers blossom on the straps of baby pink and fuchsia Mary Jane pumps.
