Move over florals, there’s a new print on the block, and it’s pretty out of this world. Gucci’s Alessandro Michele channels the spirit of ‘70s psychedelia and puts a mind-bending spin on the distinctive GG logo, interspersing the iconic initials with constellations of rainbow-hued stars to form a brand new monogram. First seen in the Cruise 2020 show, the kaleidoscopic pattern now animates a whole range of items, from ready-to-wear to accessories to lifestyle offerings. Aptly named the GG Psychedelic Collection, the print alludes to Michele’s fearless and flamboyant approach to design, which has often been described as “psychedelic”.
Womenswear pieces are street-influenced but still sophisticated, and made primarily from silk and jersey, such as a silk twill pyjama set, a chemisier dress, a hooded jacket with matching jersey shorts, a jacquard wool cardigan, and more. The ready-to-wear selection for men, on the other hand, is a touch more sporty, with key items including a technical jersey tracksuit, a nylon hood, a quilted nylon vest, and a bowling set of shirt and shorts in washed silk twill.
Gucci’s signature Supreme canvas also goes Psychedelic. Set against a black background, the multi-coloured monogram takes on a holographic effect, and is splashed across a variety of bag and luggage silhouettes, like hard suitcases, duffels, shoulder bags, backpacks, and bucket bags, as well as smaller goods like zip-around wallets, card cases, and an iPhone case. There’s even a guitar case in tribute to the rock heritage of psychedelia. Many of the styles are trimmed with leather in contrasting shades of pink, green, and black to complete the vivid look.
To go full-on Psychedelic, there are low-top and high-top Ace trainers, slip-on sneakers, and slides, along with a baseball cap, visor, and fedora, all crafted from the GG Psychedelic Supreme canvas. The 38mm G-Timeless watch and an assortment of fine jewellery in diamonds and coloured gemstones round out the collection, in addition to a pair of jacquard socks, a silk carré, and a modal silk shawl.
The GG Psychedelic collection will be available from mid-February onwards in Gucci stores and online at gucci.com
